For I’ve grown a little leaner, grown a little colder, grown a little sadder, grown a little older. And I need little angel sitting on my shoulder. Need a little Christmas now.
Jerry Herman
When I heard the song, We Need a Little Christmas, I thought about how it applied to the Holidays this year. The tune is from the Broadway musical, Mame, music and lyrics by Jerry Herman. Set in New York during the Great Depression, the main character is Mame Davis. An eccentric, free spirit who gets through life’s challenges with her own unique flair. Many of us could use a little more “Mame” in our lives, right now. She didn’t let disaster get in the way of her joy for living.
Whatever makes the Holidays special to you, whether it’s decking the halls, watching The Nutcracker on PBS or baking up a storm, do it. As I get older, I become more aware how brief our time is. This may not be the ideal moment for celebration, but it’s all we have. Try to find something, no matter how small, to be joyful for.
