This photo was taken a few years ago at a Fourth of July party. To me, it captures the true spirit of the holiday. The Fourth of July is, above all else, a birthday celebration for our country. It isn’t about politics, military strength, or choosing sides. It’s about honoring the birth of the United States and the ideals that continue to inspire us.

In a world that often seems eager to divide us, Independence Day offers something different. It reminds us that, despite our differences, we share a common home. For one day, we can set aside our disagreements and simply celebrate being Americans.

Some of my happiest memories are of the Fourth of July celebrations we hosted for family and friends. The menu never changed much—hamburgers, hot dogs, potato salad, baked beans, and, of course, a birthday cake decorated with the words, “Happy Birthday, USA.”

Looking back, I realize it wasn’t the food that made those celebrations so special. It was the people gathered around the table and the feeling that, for one summer afternoon, life was uncomplicated. The food was simple, but the memories have lasted a lifetime.

Those large gatherings are now part of another season of life. This year, it will be a much smaller family celebration. Fewer people around the table, but no less meaningful. I’ve come to appreciate that celebrations don’t have to be large to be memorable. Sometimes the greatest happiness comes from simply being together.

As evening approaches, we’ll continue one of our favorite traditions by attending a concert performed by the City Municipal Band in a nearby park. It’s something we’ve looked forward to for years. The music is familiar, the atmosphere festive, and the audience filled with families, neighbors, and visitors spread across blankets and lawn chairs.

Every year, without fail, something wonderful happens. As the band begins to play “The Stars and Stripes Forever,” the same spirited women leap to their feet and start a conga line, waving American flags as they weave through the crowd. One by one, others join them until the line winds its way through the park.

I love watching it. The people in that line are young and old. They come from different backgrounds, cultures, and walks of life. For a few joyful minutes, none of that matters. They’re simply people celebrating together, smiling, laughing, waving their flags, and sharing a moment of happiness.

Perhaps that’s the real gift of the Fourth of July. Beyond the fireworks and parades, it reminds us that we have more in common than we sometimes remember. After all, it’s a birthday party—and birthdays are meant to bring people together.
