Step by step, moment by moment we live through another day.
Anne McCaffery
Every weekday morning, I follow the same routine. I start with a steaming cup of coffee, savoring its rich aroma, and—if I remembered to buy them at Trader Joe’s —a sumptuous pain au chocolat. Otherwise, I settle for a piece of toast, perhaps slathered with butter and a bit of jam. As I enjoy my breakfast, I watch the news, keeping myself informed about the world around me while trying not to come unglued by what I’m hearing.
This is followed by a peaceful meditation session, where I try—with limited success—to develop a greater sense of awareness. After that, I write in my journal, an activity I’ve come to cherish. I write at least one page, using my favorite fountain pen on the unblemished, lined pages of my notebook.
Sometimes it’s a multitude of random thoughts swirling in my mind; other times, it’s an idea for a future blog post that I want to capture. Regardless of the content, I always begin with something I’m thankful for—starting my day in gratitude and setting a positive tone for what lies ahead.
There are days when I look at the lined page and wonder how I will fill it. I am determined not to get up until I have finished. Line by line, I accomplish my goal. It’s written quickly without editing. It might not be pretty, but there is no judgment. It’s done.
Today, I was thinking about how one page of writing, each morning, translates into a plan for larger goals. It’s engaging to consider how such a simple commitment can pave the way for achieving more substantial aspirations over time. Starting with just one page may seem trivial, yet it represents a dedication to the craft of writing and personal expression.
Set an achievable goal. Each morning, as I sit down to write, I remind myself of the importance of setting realistic expectations. Writing a full page each day is more manageable than overwhelming myself with expectations of perfection or length. It’s about progression rather than perfection.
Set aside time to accomplish it. Carving out time in my daily routine for this writing practice is important. Whether it’s the quiet of early morning or a break during the day, those moments dedicated to writing become sacred. They create a rhythm in my life, where creativity can flow freely.
Don’t give up. There will be days when inspiration runs low and the words feel forced, but persistence is key. If you commit to it, you can do it. Each line adds up, each sentence builds on the last, and what begins as a solitary page can eventually evolve into chapters, stories, or even a book. The journey of a thousand words begins with a single line, and with every drop of ink, I move closer to achieving my goals. The act of writing transforms mere thoughts into tangible results.
Life is not as complicated as we make it. Try not to be so hard on yourself. If you have done your best, be happy with that. Accept that there are going to be things and people you can’t change. Stop trying. Focus on what you can do, not what you can’t. Enjoy the time you have left.
Peace be with you.
