Virtues

What is a weed? A plant whose virtues have never been discovered.

Ralph Waldo Emerson

The Bible lists seven virtues, Aristotle cites twelve. I’m going with Aristotle since there are a few more options. If you read my last post, you already know patience is not a virtue I have in abundance. Temperance or moderation is something I do better at. It does sound boring, though. I would be concerned if someone claimed truthfulness as a virtue, that would mean they were not. I would like to believe I have magnificence, a sense of style, but then does that negate modesty? Aristotle pointed out it’s all about balance. I’ve picked out a few virtues from his list. You might find more success with some of the others.

For many religions this is Holy Season. I thought it might be a good time for introspection.  This morning, I heard Rev. Charles Jackson, Brookland Baptist Church, South Carolina, explain, “One cannot lead where they are not going.” I thought of how many times I have been guilty of, “Not walking the talk”. Maybe, as we become older there is more time for reflection. We definitely have less time to get it right.

Wishing you a peace-filled Holiday.
