Not today.

What do we say to the god of death? Not today.

Game of Thrones
George R.R. Martin

Coming a little late to the party, we just finished watching all the seasons of Game of Thrones. As I thought might be, it was very violent and a touch misogynist. I’ve heard some viewers didn’t like the ending. I thought it was okay.

The best part of the whole production, for me, is the quote at the top of this page. Melisandre asks, “What do we say to the god of death?” To which Arya replies, “Not today.” “Not today.”, is my new mantra. “The steps are icy. I might fall.” “ Not today.” “Everyone is sick. I could catch what they have.” “Not today”

“Not today.”, is a powerful statement. It proclaims that we know bad things can happen, but we have faith that they are not going to happen to us. “Not today.” Maybe, if we take one day at a time, it’s more manageable. We just have to believe the good for today. If we can continue to believe it the next day and the day after that, we might get to a place where believing in good becomes a habit.
