Alexa and Edna St Vincent Millay

Versailles

My candle burns at both ends; It will not last the night: But, ah, my foes and oh, my friends, It gives a lovely light.

Edna St. Vincent Millay

What does a photo taken at Versailles, Alexa, and Edna St. Vincent Millay have in common? Well, the photo is straightforward. The quote from Millay mentions a candle, consequently the chandelier. On the other hand, the question of Alexa and Edna St. Vincent Millay presents a more complex answer.

If you have Amazon’s Alexa, you might have noticed that she’s become more chatty lately. A few days ago, Alexa shared with me that her favorite poem is by Edna St. Vincent Millay. This revelation took me by surprise; I found the connection between a cutting-edge technology and a classic poet whose work has transcended generations fascinating. Coincidentally, the Millay poem using the analogy of a candle burning at both ends is a favorite of mine. The vivid imagery in her verse encapsulates the way we navigate our modern lives, particularly when we reflect on the turmoil we sometimes find ourselves in.

During this time of year, I have often found myself caught in the whirlwind of the holiday season. Much of my time was spent balancing a full-time job, taking care of a family, and orchestrating a celebration that included all the bells and whistles. The figurative candle burning at both ends aligns well with my experience, illustrating the time required to accomplish the celebration. While it can be exhausting, the effort seemed worthwhile when I saw the happiness it brought to my family.

It’s easy to forget to pause and appreciate the fleeting moments of warmth and connection amid the chaos. Yet, in the midst of the busyness, there is a shared joy that shines through even if it only lasts for a brief time. As we gather around the table, sharing meals and creating memories, that light fills our home and our hearts. Millay’s words serve as a reminder of the importance of savoring these moments, despite the fleeting nature of time and the energies we exert. In embracing this analogy, I am inspired to find balance and appreciate the bright spots in the hustle and bustle of our lives.

Peace be with you.
