The Journey to Self-Discovery

Slowly, I Return

l lost myself in noise and speed,
In chasing things I didn't need.
But now I walk a softer lane--
One stitched with peace instead of pain.

I don't arrive in grand display,
I show up gently, day by day.
A breath, a step, a choice to stay--
That's how I find my healing way.

No need for loud, no need for race,
Just learning how to hold my space.
And every time I choose to learn,
A part of me begins to turn.

R. Gopalakrishnan

I was sitting alone on the patio of a favorite restaurant, basking in the warm glow of the late afternoon sun. I sipped a refreshing spritzer from a tall, chilled glass, its bubbles dancing to the surface and complementing the hot summer day.

As I relaxed, watching the world go by, a young woman walked past, taking a moment to glance my way. She paused and offered a compliment, remarking on how relaxed I looked. I smiled back and replied that I was simply enjoying the peaceful afternoon, where time seemed to stand still for a while. She smile and she said, “You do you.”

Reflecting on the weight of expectations and responsibilities that often overshadow our ability to embrace what truly brings us joy, I thought about why it had taken me so long to focus on my own well-being. In the middle of the relentless pace of life, we often neglect to prioritize our own needs and desires, becoming caught up in the pursuit of meeting others’ expectations and losing sight of our unique identities.

Age, I believe, softens us around the edges in more than just our physical image. It tempers our disposition, allowing us to approach life with a deeper understanding and compassion. We have the luxury of being more introspective, reflecting on our experiences and the lessons they have taught us. During much of our life, we push forward, focused on doing what is necessary to survive, often driven by external pressures and the need to meet various expectations. However, as the years progress, we start to realize that there is value in pausing—taking the time to appreciate the small moments and cherish relationships that truly matter. Enabling us to navigate life’s complexities with grace and resilience, ultimately leading to a richer, more fulfilling life.

We now have the advantage of viewing our lives through the lens of our lived experiences, reflecting on the twisted tapestry woven from our past. We no longer feel the need to prove ourselves. What has been done is done, and by accepting our past, we grant ourselves the gift of understanding. Our choices shape us, teaching us resilience and strength. Much of our life has already been lived. Our present happiness requires us to reconcile with our past choices and move forward, recognizing that each step forward is an opportunity for growth. In this perspective, we can find comfort in our journey, allowing our experiences to advise, rather than define, who we are today.

Peace be with you.
