Enjoy life. There’s plenty of time to be dead
Hans Christian Andersen
Red Alstroemeria, peanut butter, the ocean, autumn, old books, and crisp white shirts—these are some of my favorite things. What are yours? It would be wonderful to be surrounded by our treasured things, every moment of every day, indulging in their beauty and comfort. However, that’s not always practical, and perhaps that’s part of what makes them special; the longing and appreciation enhance their value. I may not always find red Alstroemeria, but I make an effort to have flowers in the house as often as possible, knowing how their vibrant colors can brighten my mood. I wish I could look out my window and see the ocean, with its waves crashing against the shore, but instead, I enjoy the view of the majestic Colorado Mountains, their peaks dusted with snow. The mountains stand as a testament to resilience, much like the autumn leaves that dance down to the ground, whispering stories of change and renewal. Each moment spent enjoying favorite things, even in small ways like spreading creamy peanut butter on toast or curling up with an old book, contributes to the tapestry of my life.
I sometimes find myself listening to people talk about depriving themselves of truly important things, their favorite things. It mystifies me why they would do this. Life is too short to forgo the pleasures that bring us joy. While we may not always have exactly what we desire, we can usually find a worthwhile substitute that satisfies our cravings or meets our needs in unexpected ways.
Creating a surrounding that reflects my true values has not only improved my daily life but also allowed me to appreciate the small things. I feel comfortable and content in the space I’ve created for myself, which in turn has made room for growth. It brings me joy and, more importantly, instills a sense of peace in my heart and mind. This peace enables me to face daily challenges with a calmer demeanor and a renewed sense of purpose.
Life is too short not be surrounded by things we love or to not do what matters to us. Buy the flowers—it might seem like a small gesture, but the presence of beauty in our lives can uplift our spirits and remind us of the simple pleasures that make life worthwhile. Take the trip you’ve been dreaming about; adventures can offer a new perspectives, create lasting memories, and connect us with ourselves and others in meaningful ways.
What are you waiting for? A better moment may never arrive. We often get stuck in a cycle of waiting for more money or the perfect conditions to pursue our desires and dreams. However, the truth is that there’s no better time than the present to start living the life you want. Embrace the present moment and enjoy what you can now, whether it’s a quick getaway to explore new places, indulging in your favorite hobby, or simply spending quality time with loved ones. Life is a journey meant to be savored, not postponed.
Peace be with you.
