Acceptance

Backyard Tree

The older I get the more I believe the greatest kindness is acceptance.

Christina Baker Kline

I have a love-hate relationship with the tree shading our balcony. Every spring its buds burst into brilliant green leaves. Soon the tree blossoms into fragrant white flowers, snowing tiny petals unto our patio furniture for days. This creates a gigantic, seemingly never- ending mess. Late into summer, the leaves turn a deep red. This continues until, once again, we are forced to contend with constantly cleaning our patio. This time sweeping up bushels of leaves.

For me, the tree’s peak moment is when the blossoms are gone and the leaves are dazzling green. Unfortunately, the time is short lived. What lasts all summer is the shade created by its sheltering branches. That’s enough to make the work worthwhile.

Much of life is a trade off. We balance the good with the bad. Choosing to acknowledge and validate the worth of others regardless of their flaws and imperfections. We hope that they will do the same for us.

Peace be with you.

  2. Accepting the good with the bad and the bad with the good. Yes, yes, I think that’s what makes it work.

  3. Trees are messy, especially in the spring, but I love them for offering their canopy of shade the remainder of the year. Here in my little town, you’re not supposed to cut down a native Oak when building a house, so to avoid getting fined, the builder sits the house in the middle of these trees. It’s a nice look, but they don’t think about what the tree will do to the homeowners patio and decking. Just trees being trees and we are their guest. I stopped using furniture with cushions and opted for wooden slats. 🧡

    1. It’s true. Trees were here long before us. Sadly, furniture with wooden slats, especially as we become older, isn’t the most comfortable to sit on. I am resigned to the mess.
