Rediscovering Raggedy Ann

Raggedy Ann and Andy

Age may dim the beauty of material. form or face. But beauty of the inner self time will not erase.

Johnny Gruelle, Raggedy Ann

Occasionally, a unique gift is received that holds a special place in one’s heart. This past Christmas, I received one of those gifts. Earlier in the year, a friend asked for the titles of my favorite, childhood books. On that list was, Raggedy Ann. What a marvelous surprise when I opened her present and found a book titled, Raggedy Ann Stories. Part storybook and part journal, it was filled with the original stories and illustrations by author, Johnny Gruelle.

As a child, my grandmother made sure I had all the, Raggedy Ann and Andy, stories. My mother surprised me with the handmade dolls. Sewed by a friend.I bought the dolls in this photo many years later. Sadly, the originals were lost. They will always have a special place in my in my heart.

Those of you that aren’t familiar with the story may not know that Ann’s brother, Andy came along later. I was always oblivious to poor Andy. He was just along for the ride. In the book, Marcella found Raggedy Ann in her grandmother’s attic. This meant much to me because a was very close to my grandmother.

Many years later, I read the stories and think of that time. It was not without challenges. But, overall,I had a wonderful childhood. I realize, now, how blessed I was.

As we grow older it is natural to become more cynical about life. We are disappointed, deceived and disillusioned. What a gift to open a childhood book and go back to a time when life was less complicated. Thanks to an old friend.

Peace be with you.
