Remembering Hugo

Hugo

You think dogs will not be in heaven? I tell you, they will be there long before any of us.

Robert Louis Stevenson

This past December, four days before Christmas, we had to let our sweet dog, Hugo, go. He had serious heart issues and we knew it was a matter of time. It broke our hearts. We adopted him from a shelter when he was two and he was relentlessly loyal. Always looking back when he was on a walk to make sure we there. Concerned, it seemed more about our well-being than his own.

I believe he was struggling to stay alive for us. Hugo had already outlived the cardiologists prognosis of two to six months. He had lost much of his eyesight. Despite this, he loved walks and continued to be the one in charge.

We have many happy memories of his time with us. I still run my foot beneath the bed to feel him asleep in a favorite spot. After I retired, Hugo and I spent many hours at home solving the world’s problems. He often bent his head, intent on following the conversation. I miss those days we spent together. I don’t believe my husband and I were prepared for how difficult this loss would be. We have had other dogs, He is the last.

None of us knows what tomorrow will bring. Hold your loved ones close. We didn’t realize this Christmas photo of Hugo would be his last.

Hugo is definitely in heaven. Still watching over you.
In the photo, he is even smiling.

Your loss of Hugo is a panful one.

For a long while, you will most likely, still be feeling under the bed for him.

Hugo will remain in your hearts and in your memories. That is the gift he leaves behind, for you.

  3. I’m sorry for your loss. Losing a pet feels like losing a part of the family. We loved them, and they loved us in return.
