Learn the wisdom of compromise, for it is better to bend a little than to break.
Jane Wells
I took this photo of the New York skyline during a business trip in 2009, nine years after 9/11. Today, 24 years later, we are still traumatized by this unimaginable act of terrorism. But, this isn’t about that act itself. It’s a reaction to the event. On that day, for that time, we became a more patriotic nation. We became aware of what we had taken for granted. Our democracy wasn’t untouchable, after all.
An important part of our constitutional government is the right to vote. Along those lines. I have given some thought to what I can do during this election year to encourage our citizens to vote. At this age, canvassing neighborhoods, knocking on doors, is a challenge. Phone calls, although a choice, is something I am against in principle. I hate receiving solicitation calls of any kind. Posting, campaign messages online is not something I want to do.
During the last presidential election I came across a group called Vote Forward. They are a nonprofit organization that asks volunteers to send handwritten letters to encourage fellow Americans to vote. These are not campaign letters. They simply encourage voting.
So, this is my compromise. Because I can’t do everything I would like, doesn’t mean I can’t do something. Aging means I have to bend to accomplish my goals, it doesn’t mean I have to give up.

Bend but not break. I like that wisdom. Applies to most things in life. A good one!

As we age, breaking becomes a bigger concern. ๐ โญ๏ธ

It seems to me that your compromise is not only essential but a very personal way to encourage people to vote. It is in no way compromising your values.

It will be the prettiest letter they’ve ever received. I’m proud of you for stepping in to make a difference, even if you change the heart of just one person, that’s one more vote! ๐
