In the midst of winter, I found there was, within me, an invincible summer.
Albert Camus
Although spring began on March 20, this was the view from my window this past weekend. Moisture dripping down the glass, the snow covered landscape. It is not supposed to snow, it’s spring. I am done with snow! Logically, you can tell me that March is the snowiest month in Colorado. I don’t care. Please don’t say to me, “We need the moisture.” I will point out to you that rain is moisture.
Whatever invincible summer there was within me was gone soon after the last storm dumped several inches of snow on the lawn. I looked up synonyms for invincible hoping, maybe, there was a word I could grasp on to and say, “Okay, that’s me.” Nope. Unconquerable, invulnerable, indomitable. None of that describes how I feel. I’m beaten, vulnerable, domitable. It was a long winter with many challenges beyond the weather. I’m ready for it to be over. We have the vaccine, now I want green grass and flowers.
As you have, no doubt, determined, neither invincibility or patience are qualities I have in large supply. Fortunately, I have enough optimism to realize that one morning I will wake up, look out the window, and see that spring is here. “This to shall pass,” I was told, many times, while growing up. Somewhere along the way, I began to believe it.
