When the dog bites, when the bee stings when I’m feeling sad, I simply remember my favorite things and then I don’t feel so bad.Oscar Hammerstein II
Yellow gladiolas, peanut butter, the ocean, autumn, old books and crisp white shirts. These are a few of my favorite things. What are yours? It would be nice to be surrounded by our favorite things, every moment of every day. That’s not always practical and that might be part of why they are special. I can’t always find yellow gladiolas, but I try to have flowers in the house as often as I can. I wish could look out my window and see the ocean. Instead, I enjoy the view of the majestic Colorado Mountains.
I listen to people talk about depriving themselves of things that are important to them, their favorite things, and I wonder why? We may not be able to have exactly the thing we want most, but we can usually find a worthwhile substitute. William Morris said, “Have nothing in your house that you do not know to be useful or believe to be beautiful.” I’ve tried to follow that rule. I’m comfortable in the space I’ve created to live in. It makes me happy and more important it gives me a sense of peace.
Life is too short not to be surrounded by the things we love or to not do the things that are important to us. Buy the flowers, take the trip. What are you waiting for? More money, a better time to do it, may never come. Enjoy what you can now.
