Friendship is born at that moment when one person says to another, “What! You too? I thought I was the only one.
C.S. Lewis
As we get older, although we may have fewer friendships, the ones we do have tend to be deeper. I’ve known some of my friends for over thirty years. We have many shared experiences and that sharing makes us closer. Some friends I see only once or twice a year. When we do get together we can pick up as though we had just seen each other yesterday.
I have friends of all ages and from many different backgrounds. To me, that’s what makes them interesting. I want to hear different opinions from different points of view. I want to be challenged to think about things in a different way. One new friend is, I imagine, about as far away from me politically as she could be. Maybe, some day we’ll discuss that. For now, I’m interested in knowing her as a person and maybe that will give me some clues as to why she she has those opinions. Another new friend is about the age my granddaughter would be, if I had a granddaughter. The difference in our ages doesn’t stop us from liking many of the same things. We always have lots to talk about! Friendships of all kinds are precious and worth cultivating. It helps to make our lives more interesting.
